Solitaire Tips: Win More Klondike Games
Klondike is a planning game hiding behind a card game. Winning deals are less about luck than about which card you expose next — and when you choose to commit a card to a foundation.
1. Uncover face-down cards first
Your real resource is the face-down cards at the top of each tableau pile. Moves that turn a face-down card are almost always better than moves that just rearrange visible ones. If two options both expose a card, choose the one that unlocks a deeper pile.
2. Delay the foundations
Moving a card to a foundation removes it from play forever. Keep aces and low cards on the tableau as long as they help build — an A on the tableau can anchor a run that digs out a card underneath it, while an A on the foundation only scores.
3. Build in alternating colors
Tableau stacks must alternate red and black. Look for runs that let you move a whole sequence in one drag, and prefer exposing cards of the colour you are short on. The K sits at the top of the food chain — an empty column should usually welcome a King plus its whole trailing run.
4. Manage the stock, don’t fear it
The stock is a second deck of answers. Draw regularly rather than hoarding; a wasted draw is cheap, but a buried useful card stays buried. In Draw-1 modes you can often clear the stock twice — remember what is coming around the cycle.
5. Keep an empty column empty
An empty tableau column is the most powerful square on the board because it accepts a King and whatever he is carrying. Use it to shuffle long alternating runs from one pile to another, exposing the face-down cards underneath.
6. Use Auto-finish and undo as training
When the board looks done, let Auto Finish sweep the remaining cards up. If a deal stalls, undo two or three moves and ask which earlier choice buried the key card — that reflection trains better play than brute force on the next deal.
