Mahjong Solitaire Tips: Free Tiles and Planning
Mahjong solitaire looks like a matching game, but it is really a sequencing puzzle: the order in which you clear pairs decides whether the last tiles come free. Learn to read the stack before you click.
1. Know what “free” actually means
A tile is free when its whole side is open — nothing touching it from the left or the right. A tile stacked under other tiles in a deeper layer is never free, even if it looks reachable from the side. Check both neighbours before you claim a pair.
2. Remove the freeing pair first
When two identical tiles are both free, ask what each one covers. Clearing the pair that releases other pairs — especially tiles buried two or three layers deep — keeps the board moving. The pair that only sits on top of nothing can wait.
3. Avoid the “trapped pair” trap
It is common to find a matching pair where one copy is free and the other is pinned beneath another tile. Match it anyway is tempting, but you are wasting the free copy. Leave it; you will need that free copy later when the layout thins out.
4. Read the layers from above
Top-layer tiles always free up first, so prefer pairs in the highest rows. Lower tiles require you to clear everything above them first. When you are stuck, study the bottom-most visible layer: those are the tiles the whole board is waiting on.
5. Use hints to learn, not to win
A hint reveals one safe pair and often a good order. Take the hint, then ask yourself why that pair is useful before the obvious top pair — that reasoning transfers to the next board.
6. Shuffle without guilt
Every ThinkyPlay layout is winnable, but a reshuffle is a legitimate reset when only dead pairs remain. Shuffling early because you mismatched is smarter than grinding. A calm reshuffle keeps the finish in reach.
