How Reaction Time Works and How to Improve It

A reaction time is a small relay race inside your head; here is what it measures and how to run it faster and fairer.

1. What the clock is actually timing

Clicking the instant the panel turns green looks like a single action, but it is a relay race with at least three stages: your eye registers the colour change, your brain decides to respond, and your finger carries out the click. For an alert adult the whole chain typically lands between roughly 200 and 300 milliseconds, with the time the light itself takes being negligible. The number on screen is simply how long that internal relay ran on that trial.

2. Donders' nineteenth-century stopwatch

The idea of timing thought is surprisingly old. In the 1860s the physiologist F.C. Donders ran experiments that compared simple reactions with choice reactions requiring a decision, then subtracted the two measurements to estimate how long a single mental operation lasts. His subtraction logic looks crude by modern standards, but it founded reaction-time research and directly inspired the click-and-measure tests we still use today.

3. Why the wait has to be unpredictable

If the wait before green were fixed, you could learn its rhythm and click on a beat instead of in response, and the reading would measure anticipation rather than reaction. That is why this game holds the red phase for a random one to three seconds on every trial and treats an early click as a false start. Clicking red cancels that trial and schedules a brand-new random delay, so guessing never pays, and only clicks that land after the colour change are recorded as trials.

4. Five clean trials beat one lucky click

Single attempts are noisy. A blink, a twitch or a wandering thought can produce an outlier that says nothing about your typical speed, so the game collects five valid trials and reports their average alongside your fastest single click. Judge yourself by that average. A lone 180 millisecond flash is a nice badge, but it tells you far less than the five-trial mean about how alert you actually are.

  • An early click cancels that trial and starts a fresh, random wait.
  • Your best average is the lowest completed five-trial mean you have posted.
  • The fastest single trial is tracked separately and is easy to overvalue.

5. Your body moves the number more than your reflexes

Reaction time doubles as a sensitive state meter. Fatigue, a poor night of sleep, stress and even a modest amount of alcohol reliably slow it, while caffeine and simple alertness can shave a little off. Age matters too, with responses drifting slower for most people in later decades. If your average climbs a few tens of milliseconds from one session to the next, question your sleep and your screen habits before you question your reflexes.

6. What practice can realistically buy

Repeated practice on a simple reaction task produces real but modest gains, usually measured in a few up to a few dozen milliseconds, as you learn to hold attention, keep the hand ready and stop flinching during the red phase. Do not expect to leap from average to superhuman; elite athletes hover near the low end of the human range, and no amount of clicking turns a 280 millisecond baseline into 150. The durable win is a steadier, more consistent average.

7. A routine for a fair, fast average

Control what you can before each run. Sit comfortably with the hand you will click with resting loose over the panel, keep your eyes locked on the board rather than the trial counter, and do not grip or tense up, because tension slows the very movement you are timing. During the red phase, breathe out gently and let go of prediction; the instant the colour flips, click without waiting to double-check.

  • Hold your gaze on the panel from the moment a trial begins.
  • Stay loose; a coiled hand reacts slower than a relaxed one.
  • Do not chase a bad trial. Every trial is independent, so reset and run the next one clean.
